This training course provides participants with the knowledge and practical skills required to safely use, inspect, and maintain safety harnesses and lanyards when working at height.
The course covers key aspects of fall protection systems, including equipment selection, correct fitting, pre-use checks, and identification of common defects. Emphasis is placed on understanding relevant legislation and standards, ensuring that workers are confident in the use of personal fall protection equipment.
Primary Training Objectives
Legislation & Regulations - To provide an understanding of current legislation and regulations, including PUWER and the Work at Height Regulations.
Working at Height Awareness - To ensure participants understand the risks involved with working at height and how safety equipment mitigates those risks.
Equipment - Have knowledge of the different types of personal fall protection equipment
Inspection Procedures - To train participants in conducting effective pre-use and post-use inspections to identify wear, damage, and compliance issues.
Attachment Techniques - To teach correct procedures for attaching lanyards and securing harnesses to anchor points.
Harness Fitting - To develop competence in proper harness fitting for both safety and comfort.
Medical Considerations - To raise awareness of potential medical problems related to suspension trauma and other risks when using fall protection equipment.
Rescue Planning - To promote the planning and implementation of suitable rescue plans as part of an overall fall protection strategy.
Achievement Measurement
Each course participant must complete and pass a theory examination.
Prerequisites
There are no prerequisites to attend this course.
What You Need to Bring
Each participant is required to produce photographic ID on the first day of the course. Failure to do so will result in the participant being unable to attend.

Does this Course Prove Competency
The HSE provides guidance on what is meant by competency, stating that:
"Competence can be described as the combination of training, skills, experience and knowledge that a person has and their ability to apply them to perform a task safely."
They stipulate that a competent person must undertake the necessary training to help acquire and maintain satisfactory competency levels.
This course alone will not deem your employee competent but can be used in conjunction with experience, skills and knowledge to demonstrate overall theoretical and practical competence which can assist you as an Employer to address legal requirements, by contributing to your own assessment of your employee's potential competency.
